I had an interesting and informative visit to the former Essex County Hospital site to see how the re-development is progressing and how the historic hospital buildings are being retained and given a new lease of life.
There was also a team from the Colchester Archaeological Trust on-site to dig for Roman artefacts. It was fascinating to get the opportunity to visit the archaeological dig, meet the team members and see some of the recent finds, including two artefacts featuring gladiators and a Roman chariot race.
Finally, it was such an experience to walk on a recently excavated Roman road on the site with the Colchester Archaeologic Trust - this was the original Roman road linking Colchester to London. At approximately 9 metres wide this would have been the original A12!
