I’ve had a number of questions about the standards of food parcels that are being supplied for those who would ordinarily receive free school meals. This followed a number of pictures on social media of what appeared to be poor quality food parcels being distributed in some parts of the country.
Let me be clear, from what I have seen online, some of the food parcels being delivered are totally unacceptable.
I understand that within hours of the images appearing, Children's Minister Vicky Ford MP has been undertaking an urgent investigation into the quality of School Food Parcels and we will continue to demand that caterers urgently improve the quality of lunches they provide to eligible children.
Schools receive £11.50 per week from the government per child to provide school meals. Recognising the extra costs of distribution etc the Government has now increased this to £15.
All this had to be done at very short notice last week as schools were closed. Schools / Local Authorities then used their own contractors to produce food parcels and distribute food, produce and distribute the food parcels themselves or provide local vouchers to families. The pictures people saw online are from one of those companies. My understanding is that these companies are not chosen by the Government but by individual schools, Local Authorities or Multi-Academy Trusts.
However the Government and LACA set very clear guidance as to what a food parcel should contain for 5 days of lunches per child.
I am assured that the Government will continue to demand that caterers urgently improve the quality of lunches they provide to eligible children. A healthy, balanced lunch is key to ensuring children can focus on learning at home.
I understand that within the next few days the Government will bring in a national voucher scheme.
